Crane operations are a critical part of moving equipment to, from and around assets on a daily basis within the oil and gas industry.

It is therefore crucial that the cranes are subject to a rigorous maintenance scheme and that any operations utilising cranes are properly planned, risk assessed and carried out in a safe manner. Failure to follow any of these critical safety elements when carrying out crane operations could result in this activity becoming a significant Major Accident Hazard should failure occur, for example: crane collapse, crane components or load striking live plant, supply vessel being damaged, or subsea structures or pipelines being struck.

Stop and think, “What would be the consequence on my site should any of these failures occur?”.

Crane Operations podcast: Maintenance

This crane operations podcast, part of Step Change in Safety’s 2021 Q2 safety theme, Safe Lifting Operations and Preventing Falling Objects, has been provided by Awilco Drilling. Ian Michael Bond, lifting supervisor, and David Dagnel, senior mechanic, talk about the importance of crane maintenance with regard to safe lifting operations and its importance to the workforce, the rig and the company. They highlight some of the inspections, checks and maintenance that they carry out. As a result of these processes, Awilco Drilling has recently (podcast recorded spring 2021) achieved two years zero crane operational downtime and no incidents.
