The Step Change in Safety support team help member companies deliver the Step Change vision by facilitating Steering Groups and workgroups, collate good practice and communicate factual information.  The Support Team are the first point of contact for all Step Change matters.        




Steve Rae, Executive Director

Steve has more than 35 years’ experience in the International Oil and Gas Industry. Having entered the Industry, as an Offshore Technician, he happened to find himself onboard Piper Alpha on July 6th 1988.  As one of the 61 survivors, Steve chose to continue working in the Industry where he went on to become an accomplished executive. Throughout his time in Industry Steve has held several senior positions and was a member of the UK “Step Change in Safety” Leadership Team from 2007/2011. 

Since returning to the UK, in 2018, Steve has been Operations Manager with Well-Safe Solutions who are a tier one company which specialises in Well Plug and Abandonment services.  Steve is also Chairman of the Pound for Piper Charity whom exist to provide support towards the up-keep of the Piper Rose Gardens and Memorial located in Aberdeen.

Gillian Simpson, Programme Delivery Manager

Gillian joined Step Change in Safety in February 2012 after working with Oil & Gas UK on the Well Life Cycle Practices forum.  Before this she was a research scientist - gaining a PhD in molecular biology, an assistant editor of an international scientific journal and a school teacher.

Emma Gracie, Support Team Co-ordinator

Emma joined Step Change in Safety in April 2012.  Before she joined the team, she worked in the accounts and office administration departments for energy companies and in the occupational health sector.

Kirstin Gove , Head of Communications

Kirstin joined Step Change in Safety as Head of Communications in 2018. A former journalist and STV News Anchor, Kirstin has worked in the Scottish media and communications industry for nearly 25 years.
