Description of Incident

Ongoing operation: Moving BOP by use of BOP transporter after work on BOP.

After the BOP transporter was clear of the BOP, a small flame was observed on top of the transporter inside a toolbox, from the moonpool.

The BOP transporter was stopped, and the flame was extinguished by using a drill water hose. The BOP transporter was raised and moved back to park position.

The BOP transporter platform was inspected, and the burned remains of the power tool lithium battery was identified as the source for the flame. The battery was not connected to any tool.

Cause and consequence:

Cause - The lithium battery was exposed to a liquid/wet environment and caused a meltdown/burst into flame

Consequence – Damaged battery

  • Use and store tools/equipment in accordance with the user manual
