Step Change in Safety published High Value Learning (HVL) – Lifting Bridle Master Link Failures (updated 05/07/2024)

In response to the in-service master link failure and subsequent industry engagement, the Cargo Carrying Unit Master Links Knowledge Share (Sep 2025) document was produced.

Cargo Carrying Unit Master Links Knowledge Share

The document addresses safety and inspection practices for Cargo Carrying Unit (CCU) master links.

The overall goal is to improve consistency, safety, and clarity in master link inspections and reporting across the energy industry. It covers:

  • Industry Insights: Current standards (DNV-ST-E271, ISO 10855) guide inspections, but interpretations vary. No defined service life; discard based on condition.
  • Survey Finding: Inconsistent application of guidance, debate over NDT scope and lifespan caps, and need for better reporting.
  • Recommendations: Duty holders should consider recording service dates, inspection details, and NDT scope in reports, educate staff on ISO 10855-3 criteria, and follow existing standards for inspection intervals.
