Three charities have benefitted to the tune of £1,500 following an energy industry quiz organised by Step Change in Safety.
Held at the beginning of October, the online quiz saw 17 teams from across the energy industry pit their wits against one another over three rounds of questioning. The first two categories focused on major accident events and major accident hazard management, while the final round tested the teams’ general knowledge.
Step Change in Safety arranged the event to round off its third quarterly safety theme of 2021, which focused on Major Accident Hazard Understanding. Free for teams to enter, the quiz was sponsored by EnQuest, Stork and TotalEnergies, with the three companies donating the prize fund.
The event was hosted by two members of Step Change in Safety’s Major Accident Hazard Understanding workgroup, Gillian Taylor from Stork and Gillian Ewan of DNV. Technical support and online streaming services were provided by Aberdeen-based Stream Television.
Annual Themes 2021: Q3 Major Accident Hazard Understanding
A team working on TotalEnergies’ Culzean field won the competition and donated the £750 first prize to SAMH, the Scottish Association for Mental Health. Second place went to workers from the Harbour Energy operated North Everest platform who donated their £500 prize to Prostate Cancer UK. Finishing third was an onshore-based team from Ithaca Energy, who chose to donate their £250 winnings to the Grampian Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.
Step Change in Safety programme delivery manager Gillian Simpson, who was involved in organising the quiz, said: “The online quiz proved to be a big success, offering participants a different way to review and build their knowledge and understanding of major accident hazards, whilst having a bit of fun and healthy competition on a Friday evening too. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from those who took part, particularly in relation to how the event complemented the suite of other resources that have been available over the quarter.
“We are grateful to all of the sponsors and individuals who played a part in making the online quiz happen. The generosity they have shown has ensured that SAMH, Prostate Cancer UK and the Grampian Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre have all benefitted from the event.”
Throughout 2021, Step Change in Safety has focused on highlighting a different safety theme during each quarter. Points identified in reports published by the UK Health and Safety Executive and OGUK in 2020 helped to shape the themes. The first quarter focused on Life Saving Rules, followed by Safe Lifting Operations and Preventing Falling Objects in the second quarter. Until the end of December, the current focus is on Personal Responsibility for Safety.
A suite of resources based around each safety theme, either produced by Step Change in Safety or sourced from member companies and partner organisations, is available to download from the Step Change in Safety website. All of the resources are designed to improve workplace safety, offering good practice and guidance from across the industry.
