Step Change in Safety announces two appointments to its Leadership Team

Two senior industry figures take up positions

Step Change in Safety is pleased to announce the appointment of two senior industry figures to its Leadership Team.

Girish Kabra, North Sea Operated Assets Director, Spirit Energy and Sandy Fettes, Global Wells Director, EnQuest, bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Leadership Team, which is responsible for planning and monitoring the activities of the safety organisation.

With more than twenty years’ global experience in upstream oil and gas, and LNG businesses, Girish Kabra has responsibility for all asset management activities for Spirit Energy’s operated assets in the UK and the Netherlands. Prior to this, he held the role of Decommissioning Director during which time he successfully established the Operator’s decommissioning business unit.

With more than twenty years’ global experience in upstream oil and gas, and LNG businesses, Girish Kabra has responsibility for all asset management activities for Spirit Energy’s operated assets in the UK and the Netherlands. Prior to this, he held the role of Decommissioning Director during which time he successfully established the Operator’s decommissioning business unit.

Girish is a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Fellow of Association of Project Management, and is a previous winner of the OGUK Mentor of the Year award for his commitment to developing the future pipelines of talent in the energy industry.

Sandy Fettes was recently appointed to the role of Global Wells Director at EnQuest having previously held the positions of Wells Delivery Manager, Head of Wells & HSEA, and Technical Services Director.

Having begun his career in civil engineering, Sandy joined SantaFe’s well engineering program in the mid-1990s, progressing from rig crew, through drilling engineering to well site supervisory roles and then Turnkey Project Manager. He then joined Fairfield Energy where he became Drilling Manager before moving to UK-based Operator, EnQuest, in 2015.

Commenting on his appointment to the Leadership Team, Girish Kabra said; “I am delighted to be appointed to the leadership team. I firmly believe Step Change in Safety has already made a significant positive impact in improving the safety culture in the UK oil and gas industry and being part of their leadership team is a real privilege. As we go through the difficult times for our industry, the importance of authentic safety leadership has been more pronounced than ever, and I look forward to helping other organisations lead the current and future challenges.”

Sandy Fettes said; “Step Change in Safety is an extremely important industry body that touches everybody working in our oil and gas industry. As we progress towards a carbon neutral energy balance, it is of paramount importance we effectively manage the safety of our people and our Major Accident Hazards. I am looking forward to working with the team to share, learn and help make a difference to our people at the worksites.”

The Leadership Team includes senior leaders and officials from member companies, industry-related trade associations, trade unions, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), along with the onshore and offshore workforce.

Welcoming the new appointments, Step Change in Safety Executive Director Steve Rae said; “Our industry has been in a state of perpetual change for an extended period and, as such, it is inevitable that we will experience changes within our Step Change Leadership Team.
