“The Offshore Helicopter Safety Leadership Group, which is made up of the UK CAA, helicopter operators, representatives from the oil and gas industry, membership organisations and union officials, met today (Thursday January 5, 2017). Members were briefed about the offshore event which took place on Wednesday, December 28th, 2016, when a Sikorsky S-92 helicopter experienced unexpected control responses during the final stages of a landing at an offshore platform.
“The crew responded immediately in accordance with their training. The aircraft made a harder than normal landing and shut down; there were no reported injuries amongst the passengers or the crew. The landing resulted in the wheel assembly causing minor damage to the helideck.
“The investigation continues to focus on the Tail Rotor Pitch Change Shaft Bearing Assembly. However, it should be stressed that this is an ongoing investigation in its early stages. The key components are now subject to a deeper inspection at the Sikorsky facility in the US.
“Enhanced monitoring of this area is being or already has been implemented and information is being shared openly amongst members of the OHSLG.
“We are committed to communicating the facts surrounding this, and any incident involving a helicopter, and we will provide further information as and when it is available.”
