There are a number of mechanical lifting aids on our sites which if used correctly can significantly reduce the need for manual handling and in turn assist in preventing injuries to personnel.

However, these types of equipment themselves, if used incorrectly, can be a cause of injury to personnel directly and lead to dropped loads.

Therefore, it is essential to ensure that individuals are trained and competent to use them and their use has been planned and risk assessed so they can be carried out in a safe manner.

Roy Begg, account lead with EnerMech’s cranes and lifting department, provides this podcast on mechanical lifting, which is the third subtopic of the 2021 Q2 safety theme, Safe Lifting Operations and Preventing Falling Objects. In the short podcast, Roy reminds listeners of the need for inspection and maintenance checks and the importance of not becoming complacent when carrying out ‘routine lifts’. This mechanical lifting operations podcast, part of Step Change in Safety’s 2021 Q2 safety theme, Safe Lifting Operations and Preventing Falling Objects, has been provided by Kenny Lawtie, an offshore lifting expert. Kenny is Head of Lifting / Lifting Technical Authority and Lead Construction Engineer at Wood PLC. In the podcast he talks listeners through the key aspects of safe mechanical lifting, routine non-crane lifts, lifting competence and closely following safe processes and procedures. He also highlights the importance of specific risk assessments and that their communication and understanding is paramount, and ensuring that controls are in place prior to beginning operations. Kenny has the safety of all of his offshore personnel as his top priority.
