Welcome to the extended Spring update from Craig Wiggins, Step Change in Safety.

Hi ,

This is my first seasonal members update since I took over the reins as Executive Director from Steve Rae towards the end of 2023. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind welcome and support.

My first few months in this role gathered pace, from meeting with our existing and new members, to presenting at conferences across the country, refreshing our strategy and developing a 3-year plan with the Step Change in Safety Board, Leadership and Support Teams; leadership, collaboration and engagement is how we champion global safety across the energy industry.

Our quarterly themes align with Always Safe and Safer Together, our Norwegian and Australian counterparts, and throughout Q2 we focussed on ‘Prevention of Personal Injury’. We can all #PlayOurPart to prevent injury to ourselves and our colleagues by understanding hazards at site, the harm they cause can cause us, and how we can control them. Find out more about Q2 and all member resources available to you in this update below.

The launch of our Process Safety Workforce Survey, in partnership with Empirisys, was announced in April. Following on from our successful Process Safety Leadership Survey, we are asking the offshore and onshore energy workforce to play their part by committing to undertaking the survey. Your input will enable leadership teams to identify where improvements in process safety leadership can be made across both organisations and industry. The response to date has been very positive and there is still time to take part. Further information on how you can complete the survey is included below.

Our bi-annual Safety Rep Forum also took place in April, and we were overwhelmed by the response, both in attendance and feedback. It was encouraging and motivating to see our members taking the time to meet other safety reps, make connections, share experiences and learn from each other.

Preparation is underway for Q3 theme ‘Safe Lifting, Working at Height and Preventing Dropped Objects’. Don’t forget to follow LinkedIn | Step Change in Safety to stay updated on all the latest resources, events and materials as they are released.

Finally, the health and safety of the workforce always come first. Preventing incident and injury across the energy industry is what continues to shape and drive our goals. Thank you all for continuing to #PlayYourPart to ensure this happens.

Craig Wiggins, Executive Director

Q2 - Prevention of Personal Injury

In line with our collaborative quarterly themes with our friends at Safer Together Australia & Always Safe Norway, April-June sees focus on ‘Prevention of Personal Injury’.

We have a range of member resources to support our Q2 theme including films, posters, safety moments, resource packs, presentations and interactive resources with questions which will help you:

🔺 Enhance awareness of personal hazards and the potential for personal injuries

🔺 Reinforce the hierarchy of control in reducing personal risk

🔺 Understand how your decisions affect the risk of personal injuries

*HAVE YOUR SAY* Process Safety Workforce Survey 2024

PSWS 2024

In April we launched our Process Safety Workforce Survey to the energy industry workforce, in partnership with Empirisys, at our bi-annual Safety Rep Forum which saw over 100 people attend at the city’s Union Kirk. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

The survey examines the eight Principles of Process Safety and follows on from our successful 2023 Process Safety Leadership Survey, which received responses from more than 450 senior leaders from 73 companies.

We now want to hear from YOU - our workforce.

We are asking the offshore and onshore energy workforce to play their part by committing to undertaking the survey, enabling your leadership teams to identify where improvements in process safety leadership can be made across your organisations and industry.

The survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete and will close on 17 June 2024.

Step Change in Safety member organisations have been emailed with a survey launch pack and QR link but can also take part by contacting gillian@stepchangeinsafety.net

Process Safety Training Course Endorsement – Salus Technical

Process Safety Training Course Endorsement – Salus Technical

We have recently taken a significant step by endorsing a Process Safety Training course developed by member organisation, Salus Technical. This is the first time we have made this commitment as part of a new direction to collaborate closer with our members to fulfil our mission of reducing incident and injury in the energy industry.

Since its launch in early 2023 by Aberdeen-based process safety firm, Salus Technical, the Process Safety Awareness course has become a cornerstone of the business. The training has already been completed by over 1,500 participants from companies such as Serica Energy, Petrofac, and Neptune Energy, with several organisations enrolling their entire workforce.

‘Process Safety Awareness Training’ will be actively promoted to Step Change in Safety members, having undergone rigorous testing and evaluation by the organisation’s leadership team. The endorsement signifies our confidence in the course’s potential to disseminate safety knowledge on a global scale.

A course discount is available to all Step Change in Safety members, please visit Process Safety Training to learn more.

Team Expansion & New Job Creation

Nicola T Image

We welcomed Nicola Taylor to the team as Business Engagement Manager, a new position created to further support our 165+ members.

Nicola joins the team with extensive energy industry experience and a background in HSE, Communications and Project Management having held positions with Stork, Sparrows Group (now Altrad Sparrows), the Society for Underwater Technology and Expro.

Craig Wiggins, Executive Director for Step Change in Safety says, “The position of Business Engagement Manager was created to ensure the new member onboarding process and ongoing support of our valued members. We want all of our members to fully engage with us and to know what is available to them from a support and resource perspective. Most importantly, we are a member-led organisation which allows individuals from our member companies to have a voice and help shape our plans, activities and direction.

“Step Change in Safety is unique. No other industry has a body that brings together industry leaders, operators, the supply chain, unions, the Regulator and the workforce, to create best practice guidelines and showcase safety. The resources and toolkits we create, and events we organise are all free for our members and their employees.”

Craig continues, “We welcome Nicola and know she will be a valuable member of the Step Change in Safety team and for our members.”
